How We Teamed Up
The Team Up Foundation was able to support Youth Challenge Fund by granting funds to their “Hispanic Youth Alive” and “Girls Can Play” programs. Hispanic Youth Alive has created a space called “El Centro” where Latin-Hispanic youth can access a variety of activities which aim to help young Latinos build the life skills and social networks they need to become young leaders and agents of change both in their communities and within society as a whole. Girls can Play is a sports and leadership program that encourages young women to be physically active through the game of netball. The program offers a nine-week netball skill development and training program that includes National Coaching Certification (NCCP), First Aid certification, and an Umpiring and Coaching practical. Girls can play also offers a six-week leadership program for participants for work on life skills and future planning.
About the Organization
The Youth Challenge Fund (YCF) has brought together government and privately-matched funds in a common purpose: to improve opportunities for Toronto's young people, particularly in the city’s 13 priority neighbourhoods. The Government of Ontario invested an initial $15 million in YCF in February 2006. Thanks to the remarkable generosity of their donors, United Way Toronto raised $15.8 million in support of YCF, which was matched dollar by dollar by the Province and enabled $42.5 million to be invested in 111 unique, youth-led initiatives across Toronto’s 13 priority neighbourhoods.
