How We Teamed Up
Special Olympics Ontario has a longstanding relationship with the Toronto Maple Leafs and is now a partner of all four teams as a 50/50 raffle partner. Recently during the 2011 Provincial Winter Games in Thunder Bay, Maple Leaf GM Brian Burke was present as a keynote speaker sharing his (and his team’s) experiences and passion for Special Olympics. Many team players, coaches and GM’s from the Maple Leafs and Raptors have been a part of the Special Olympics movement over the years and we hope to continue this wonderful relationship! Funds raised through the MLSE Team Up Foundation have assisted in supporting various competitions such as Provincial Games and Hometown Games. This much needed funding helps offset expenses such as transportation and accommodation costs for participating athletes.
About the Organization
Special Olympics Ontario (SOO) is a non-profit, volunteer driven community-based charitable organization that is part of a worldwide program providing year-round sports training and competition for people with an intellectual disability. The primary objective of Special Olympics Ontario is to contribute to the physical, social and psychological development of people with intellectual disabilities through positive, successful experiences in sport. Its instrument of program delivery is through the local community sport clubs, which gives athletes the opportunity to train and compete twelve months of the year. However, in keeping with the philosophy of sport training, the organization also promotes competition at higher levels. This is accomplished with the staging of Provincial, National and International Games.
