How We Teamed Up
The Team Up Foundation partnered with Grandravine to help fund their hockey program. The hockey teams in this program are on the ice approximately 26 weeks of the year. Participants do not need to know how to skate or play hockey, just must have the will to play the sport.
About the Organization
Grandravine Special Program offers a hockey program for the developmentally challenged of all ages and gender. The program is geared to the needs and abilities of each player. Special skills development groups are devoted solely for the beginner, teaching them how to skate and the very basic fundamentals of the game. This is done with the help of our squad of over 20 volunteer coaches. All players, beginners and veterans alike, play on one of three teams known as the Grandravine Tornadoes. Throughout the season the Tornadoes play against other teams in the GTA who are all part of Special Hockey International.
The program is much more than just hockey. Before going on the ice, every player is learning to cope with everyday activities, such as time scheduling, dressing, social interaction and communication. At the same time the community gains more awareness, showing that these individuals can participate in our society in the same way as any other person.
